Getting started with reading your meter
What is metered LPG?
Metered LPG
- Metered gas networks supply LPG to your property when natural gas is not available.
- Just like natural gas, metered LPG is piped directly into your home – so you have a constant gas supply.
- Each individual home will have a gas meter connected.
- Charges are calculated at regular intervals for the volume of gas that passes through the meter.
- Charges are invoiced quarterly based on the amount of gas consumed, plus a daily supply charge for the length of the billing period.
Bulk hot water
- Bulk hot water is found in strata complexes (such as flats, units, and apartments).
- A central bulk hot water system means hot water is supplied to each individual apartment without a hot water tank taking up space in those apartments.
- Each apartment will have an individual hot water meter connected.
- Charges are calculated at regular intervals for the volume in litres of hot water measured by the hot water meter. This charge does not include the provision of the water.
- Customers are invoiced quarterly based on the amount of hot water they consume.
Unmetered appliances
- In some buildings we supply unmetered gas to cooking appliances, BBQs and central heating.
- These charges are always shown as a separate charge on your invoice.
- Unmetered supply charges are calculated as a daily rate for the length of your billing period.

How to read your meter
1. Find your meter
The most common place to find your LPG or water meter is:
- Front of your house
- Garage
- Porch
- External wall
- Water meters may be located inside your apartment, such as under the sink or in the ceiling
Please be careful – meters can be home to unfriendly guests.
2. Identify your meter type
There are many different types of meters. Here are the most common ones:

Domestic diaphragm gas meter
These meters are read left to right – take note of the black dials with white digits to confirm your meter reading (do not include the red digits).

These meters are read left to right – take note of the black dials and two red dials to confirm your meter reading.

Water flow meters – type 2
On these meters, you read all the black digits and the first two of the round dials left to right

Water flow meters – type 3
These meters are read left to right – take note of all four black digits and two red only.

Water flow meters – type 4
These meters are read left to right – take note of all four black digits, one red digit and one round dial (x0,01).

Water flow meters – type 5
This panel meter will display the reading on the digital panel.

Actaris/Cyble remote read meter
How do these meters work?
- Some properties have hot water meters that are fitted with a remote reader unit. The remote read unit transmits an electronic signal your meter reader can pick up via a handheld reader device from outside the property or nearby. This means readings can be obtained even when a customer is away or not at home.
- The meter itself may be located somewhere inaccessible like a cupboard or in the ceiling.
- There are two components:
- the physical meter which has the dial displaying a reading
- the plastic remote reading unit usually fitted over the top. The remote reading unit does not have a display and can only be read remotely.
- These meters are read left to right – take note of all five black dials and two red digits.
