New meters and installations
If you’re building or renovating your home or business, you might need to update your energy connection. This could include installing, changing, relocating or removing a meter. Sometimes a new cable or gas pipe could be needed too. At Origin, we can help organise your new connection.
Get started with a new electricity or gas connection
To get your property connected for the very first time, you’re in the right place. Here, you can also make changes to your meter (including for solar), and learn more about removing or abolishing your supply.
What’s the difference between a moving and a new connection?
The difference is whether the property has had electricity or gas before.
Moving is for a property where services are already setup. The infrastructure (meter, wiring or pipes) is already there and just needs to be turned on. To move, choose a business or home energy plan and sign up online.
A new connection is for a property that needs electricity or gas connected for the first time. This if for a property that has never had services. It needs a new meter installation or connection to the network for the first time. For new connections visit our New energy connections page.
| Moving (Reconnection) | New connection | |
| Infrastructure | Existing/established home | New build/renovation |
| Property Type | Meters other equipment/services are ready to be used | Doesn’t have a meter or other equipment/services |
| Action needed | Account set up, possible meter read | A network connection |
| Cost | When you move home, your distributor may charge a disconnection/reconnection fee. To learn more visit our Moving fees page. | Fees and charges for your state can be found in Meter installation, alteration and abolishment fees (PDF 148 KB) |
Important information about gas connection costs (VIC only)
Depending on your location, the charge can vary between $1700-$2926. Details of the charge will be provided once you have submitted your request and it is reviewed. This charge covers the cost of the gas line installation and is passed on from your local distributor. It’s important to note, Origin doesn’t charge additional fees for this work, and we’ll always make sure we inform you of the costs and get consent before the works go ahead.
Some jobs may incur extra costs. If the job needs a quote, we’ll be in touch to set up a time for the distributor to assess the work involved. This could take up to 20 working days for residential connections, and up to 40 working days for commercial connections. The quote will include a timeframe to complete the work. Work can’t start until the costs are paid in full.
