What is controlled load?

Controlled load (CL) is where electricity is supplied to specific high-energy use appliances that have their own wiring and meters separate from the rest of a home’s electricity.

Because their circuits are separate and they don’t require constant power supply, they can be switched on and off by the business that manages the poles and wires in your local area and billed with a controlled load tariff. This usually happens at off-peak times.

Controlled load benefits

We use controlled load to manage demand and help the grid run smoothly and efficiently. By shifting certain electricity loads to off-peak times, we can take pressure off the grid, optimise renewable energy and keep costs down.

Save with controlled load tariffs

Tariffs refer to the way you’re charged for the energy you use. Sometimes, the rates you’re charged will depend on the times you’re using energy.

When large household appliances (like hot water systems) are wired separately from the rest of your property, they can be managed and charged separately too. This means they can be powered up at off-peak times, resulting in a lower rate.

Does controlled load help the environment?

It’s moving that way. Traditionally, the times when controlled load appliances have been switched on has been overnight.

But now, thanks to solar and the Origin Loop virtual power plant (VPP), there are times when the grid has a big boost of clean energy, usually in the middle of the day. This changes things for the better!

Instead of powering up CL appliances overnight with traditional fossil fuels, we can look to charge them during the middle of the day when renewable energy – like solar or wind – generation abundant.

When that happens, these hungry appliances can run off energy that’s cleaner, which in turn helps the environment.
