Installing a natural gas meter

Once the gas service line has been laid, you’re ready for the natural gas meter to be installed at the property.

You can either submit your natural gas requests using the Connect Assist portal or send your forms and other info to gasconnectionrequests@originenergy.com.au

By using Connect Assist, the builder can track the progress of the connections you’ve submitted.

1. Gas application form

Complete and send us the gas application form to arrange for the gas service line and meter to be installed and connected.

Application for a gas service line and meter installation

Appliance check list

Request for a New Energy Account

2. Meter installation

Once we’ve received the request, we’ll raise the order with the distributor - this takes us two working days. The distributor will then have the meter installed, usually within another six to eight weeks.

3. Handover

The final plumbing work can now be completed.

The site should be ready for the builder to hand it over to the client.

Altering a gas supply

Are you upgrading a customer’s appliances and need to change their supply? Are you moving their meter to a new location? Make sure you give the client the load details of their new and existing appliances.

Once they have the load details, get them to give us a call on 1300 132 480.

1. Request type

We’ll work out with the distributor if they need to provide a quote for the work – or if it will be a standard request.

2. Extra costs

If the job needs a quote, we’ll get in touch with the applicant and set up a time for the distributor to visit and assess whether there are extra costs involved. This could take about 20 working days. The quote will include a timeframe to complete the work, which won’t start until these costs are paid in full.

3. Commence upgrades

Once any costs are paid, the distributor will start the upgrades – and they’ll usually be done within 20 working days.

1. Safety

Safety is always our main priority - so when removing a meter and the line will remain connected, be sure to check there aren’t any safety risks.

2. Disconnection at the street

If you want the gas main disconnected at the street, make sure your client knows that their gas supply will be abolished – and they’ll need to start the original gas connection process again.  Some distributors will only remove meters for a day or two, because of the risks of leaks or explosion.

3. Unsure?

If you’re not sure whether or not a service line needs to be abolished (with a turn-off at street), get in touch with the distributor for advice – and always do what’s safest.

4. Arrange abolishment

To arrange a gas abolishment, we’ll need your client to call us on 1300 132 480. These requests usually take around 20 working days.

1. Gas service line application form

Some builders will organise to have a natural gas service line installed when the frame goes up. But if this didn’t happen, you’ll need to complete and send us the Application for a gas service line form – just make sure you do this at frame stage. Once we have it, we’ll raise the request with the distributor to have the service line installed. You’ll need to have accurate appliance and mega joule load information at this point to make sure the appropriate lines are laid.

2. Extra costs

If the job needs a quote (includes work not considered ‘standard’), we’ll get in touch with the applicant and set up a time for the distributor to visit and assess whether there are extra costs involved. This could take about 20 working days. The quote will include a timeframe to complete the work, which won’t start until these costs are paid in full.

3. Lock-up date

By lock-up date, the distributor expects the site to be all clear, and ready for the gas line to be installed. On this day, the planner will inspect the site – and if it’s not ready, you’ll have to wait another ten working days before they return.

4. Installation

Once the planner has given the all clear, the gas service line will be installed - usually within 30 working days - though weather and availability of crew may impact these timings.
