Your bills are based on your energy usage
And we rely on the data from your meters to know how much you've used.
There are two types of meters: smart (also known as digital) meters and basic meters.
Smart meters send us the data automatically, basic meters need a human
Ever looked into your bill and noticed you have an estimated meter read?
That's probably because you've got a basic meter, and for some reason, we weren't able to get a reading. Although meter readers try to get to everyone's property, sometimes things don't work. Maybe a barking dog gets in the way, a gate is locked, or the scheduled read date just doesn’t work.
Estimated readings can be pretty close – but they’re not 100% accurate
But the good news is now you can get stuck in and do a meter reading yourself. Read your own meter, send your data straight to us and ensure you only ever pay for what you use. We're required by our regulators to ensure a meter reader gets an official reading from your property once every year, but in between times, you're welcome to send us your data. Any issues with the reading at all, we’ll let you know.
More regular data will give you more insight
Smart meters send us data every day or so, whereas basic meters are scheduled for a reading every 2-3 months. To fast track that process, you can choose to send us your data. Then you'll be able to view your usage via My Account (online or in the app) and get more insight into your energy usage patterns.
