Your moving house countdown starts here

Two months to go…

Get packing!

Two months sounds like a long time, but trust us – a little early planning goes a long way.

Decluttering tips
  • Donate any unwanted and pre-loved items to charity, sell quality items on online spaces, give items away to family and friends, host a garage sale, and throw out any junk.
  • Start using up perishable food in your fridge, freezer and pantry. It’s also a good time to get rid of old food and drinks in the pantry and cupboards, so you don’t have to cart it over to your new house. Perhaps, one last dinner party with friends and family?
  • Begin collecting packing boxes and packing materials – check your local supermarket for freebies.
  • To make your move kinder to the environment, check online for stores that sell recycled moving boxes.
  • Get friends and family to collect old newspapers for you to wrap your non-fragile items.

Move your other utilities

Head online and arrange to move your other utilities to your new house. Here are some common household utilities – tick them off as you go.

Natural gas

If your natural gas service is with Origin, you can move this at the same time as
your electricity.

Internet

We offer a range of internet plans and offer a $10 discount when you bundle an internet plan with your energy.

Water

Your water service provider may do a final meter read to generate a final bill.
Moving to an apartment building where we supply hot water? We’ll get that organised
for you!

Home phone

Got a home phone? Let your service provider know, as you may need a new connection and/or a new phone number.

Mobile phone

It pays to let your provider know your new home address for any mobile or internet services. Check if there are any costs involved to move existing services to your new place.

Mail redirection

It’s always a good idea to use a mail redirection service through your local post office or online.
You can choose the timeframe – the price varies depending on how long you want the redirection of mail service (3, 6 or 12 months) available with Australia Post.

Let important providers know

There’s plenty to think about when you’re moving house – and some of these services might be the last thing on your mind. While you’re at it, update your address details because you never know when you’ll need to use them!

Notify Government departments

The good thing about the MyGov app, is that you can change your address for several government services in one place. These include:

  • Australian Tax Office (ATO)
  • Medicare
  • Electoral commission

See the full list of government services.

Contact other providers

It’s important to let other providers know your new home address. Some common ones are:

  • Banks and other financial institutions
  • Superannuation fund
  • Insurance companies – (house, contents insurance, car, income protection, life, pet insurance (don’t forget your furry friends)! Let each provider know, especially if you have your insurance with multiple providers).
  • Health insurance
  • Medical providers – your GP, specialists, dentist
  • Local council(s)
  • School, universities and any other education providers
  • Charity groups
  • Employer(s) – psst…it’s a good time to review update your emergency contacts at the same time, especially if you’re moving interstate.
  • Driver licence
  • Subscriptions – everything from newspapers to magazines and even your food delivery services
  • Gym memberships – it’s a good time to assess whether you can transfer your membership to the area you’re moving to.
  • Loyalty programs/airline programs – if you have these as apps on your phone, you can easily update them here.
Book your removalist service

It’s a good idea to book your removalist service in advance, especially if you’re moving during peak moving house periods in Australia. This is generally between January and March.

Get online and compare quotes, and don’t be afraid to shop around before you commit to a removalist service. Read their customer reviews and see their customer ratings. Be sure to mention any specialist or fragile items so they can allocate the right space and resources to ensure the item(s) get there in one piece.

Book a professional cleaning service

A professional cleaning service might be a cheaper and more convenient option for your house move. Get online to see what house cleaning services are offered and request a quote.

Most reputable cleaning companies offer a ‘move-out’ clean and guarantee the full return of your bond. Don’t be afraid to shop around for quotes, and/or ask family or friends to recommend a cleaning service.

One week to go…

Nearly time for the big day!

Hang in there with these tips.

  • Have everything packed and ready for the removalists to make the process cheaper and quicker.
  • Take photos and keep a checklist on your phone and one with the company you’re moving with, in case you need to cross-check anything later.
  • Make a final house cleaning checklist and divide up tasks between your household members.
  • Ensure you have adequate insurance cover for your house move. It pays to double check this with your insurer before any of your items make the big move.

Moving day…

It’s finally here!

You can ensure it all goes to plan by following these handy tips:

  • Get a restful night’s sleep beforehand, because you’ll need all your energy on the big day.
  • Organise your removalists to come early, so they can get everything over to your new place, and you can get sorted quickly.
  • Keep a bag of toiletries, pyjamas, spare clothing, phone chargers, money and children’s toys within easy reach.
  • Moving with little ones? Arrange with your friends or family to mind them during the move.
  • Make the beds first. Trust us on this one, because once you’re done carting items back and forth in the car, and unpacking for the day, you’ll want to hit the sack asap!
  • Put your feet up and order takeaways, or get family and friends to drop around a meal.
