Origin has received the highest possible recognition from national Indigenous internship program CareerTrackers for its commitment to creating opportunities for Indigenous students.
The Corporate Plus Award recognises the outstanding contribution Origin and its people have made to the success of so many bright and ambitious Indigenous students.
Origin CEO Frank Calabria said that it was an honour for Origin’s Indigenous internship program to be acknowledged as best practice among a group of leading corporate organisations involved with CareerTrackers.
“At Origin, we are proud to support Indigenous pre-professional and university students and help them prepare for leadership in the workplace and in the community.
“Our partnership with CareerTrackers is more than a pledge to provide internships for Indigenous students – it’s part of building a culture of respect, promoting diversity across our business and demonstrating Origin’s commitment to reconciliation,” Mr Calabria said.
As a CareerTrackers partner since 2014 and a member of the 10x10 program, Origin offers internships to at least 10 students each year for 10 years. Demonstrating the success of the program, Origin doubled this year’s intake to 20 students. The aim is to transition students into full-time employees upon completion of their degree.
CareerTrackers founder and CEO, Michael Combs said that Origin had embraced the CareerTrackers vision at all levels within the organisation.
“With 99 employment partners, we see a lot of Indigenous employment programs, but we have been impressed with Origin’s commitment to developing a unique program that goes above and beyond. Origin’s program creates the best possible experience and career development opportunities for their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees.
“In particular Origin is committed to creating opportunities that inspire excellence – for example as part of the induction process, the interns attended an off-site event to help them become acquainted with the business, its operations and its values and commitments from the very beginning. This is a crucial element in helping the interns build confidence while gaining the skills and knowledge to deliver,” Mr Combs said.
Origin’s internship program incorporates professional and leadership development and is closely aligned with training offered through CareerTrackers. The program has also been integrated into Origin’s business with volunteering opportunities for Origin employees with CareerTrackers as well as unique business opportunities created specifically for the interns.
A key component of Origin’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), the CareerTracker’s program helps Origin achieve its aspirations around promoting education, skills, jobs and careers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
