I’m thrilled to announce that Origin has been certified as a Great Place to Work® by the global authority on workplace culture, the Great Place to Work Institute.
Written by Sharon Ridgway, Head of People and Culture
We’ve worked hard over recent years to develop Origin’s culture and create a workplace where people have a clear sense of purpose, feel valued, have a voice and feel genuinely included and supported.
Striving to be a great workplace
We’ve been on a journey to foster a purpose-led, values-driven organisation. Our path to creating change started with listening to feedback from our team members. They told us that inclusion, flexibility, recognition and reward were all important to them, so we’ve created a range of programs and practices to support those needs.
Some of the key areas we’ve focussed on are:
- our All Roles Flex program
- generous parental leave
- inclusive practices around gender, LGBTIQA+ and indigenous employees
- a company-wide people leadership code
- better learning and development opportunities, and
- a new recognition and reward system.
This is all underpinned by simpler systems and processes for a better employee experience.
At times it felt like change wasn’t happening fast enough. But we’ve achieved some major milestones in 2020 that tell us we’re on the right track, and that we’re building a culture that compares with the best companies around the world.
Achievements to be proud of
Our Great Place to Work accreditation builds on several recent achievements for Origin.
We were ranked in the top 10 globally for gender equality by Equileap, and we’ve been recognised as an Employer of Choice by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA). GoodCompany recognised Origin as the best workplace for giving back to the community.
This year, we also achieved our highest employee-engagement score ever, putting Origin in the top quartile of companies in Australia and New Zealand. Most of our team members have been working remotely during the global pandemic, dealing with challenges like isolation and balancing work and life, so we consider it a huge achievement that our people feel well supported.
How was Origin assessed?
The Great Place to Work Institute, an independent, global organisation, assesses the policies, practices and programs of organisations from around the world, alongside feedback from employees in engagement surveys. This helps them to determine – and certify – which organisations are great places to work.
The Great Place to Work Institute assessed Origin against three key areas that have a direct impact on building trust and creating a great workplace culture – credibility, pride and respect. This work encapsulated all aspects of Origin and went beyond our people programs to include things like our philanthropic work through the Origin Energy Foundation and support for local communities.
What does Great Place to Work certification mean?
The certification represents the top standard in workplace culture globally and is considered the most definitive ‘Employer of Choice’ recognition. It’s awarded for 12 months, requiring an annual assessment to retain certification.
Since 1992, the Great Place to Work Institute has surveyed more than 100 million employees around the world and used those deep insights to define what makes a great workplace.
Origin is the only ASX-listed company to be certified a Great Place to Work in 2020.
Supporting our people and fostering a highly engaged workforce helps us to continue delivering on our purpose: getting energy right for our customers, community and planet.
