Feed-In Tariffs

Feed-in tariffs credit your bill when your system generates excess solar power.

Sometimes, solar panels generate more energy than you use which means that you may qualify for a credit on your energy bill for sending energy back into the power grid. This is called a feed-in tariff. The rates depend on the state you live in, and may be funded by your state government, your energy retailer, or a mix of both.

Voluntary Feed-in Tariff Scheme

From 21 July 2014

Origin will provide customers in the ACT with eligible solar electricity generation systems our voluntary feed-in tariff (FIT) rate of 6c/kWh* for any excess electricity exported to the grid.

To be eligible, you’ll need to have a net metered installation with a system capacity of less than 30kW. Some restrictions do apply.

Having a net metered installation means that you first use the electricity you generate from your solar system at your property – with any electricity that you don’t use going back into the electricity grid.

Minimum Retailer Feed-in Tariff (R-FIT) – 1 January 2016 onwards

The Minimum Retailer Feed-in Tariff is a mandatory feed-in tariff (FIT) payment that electricity retailers must make to eligible net metered solar electricity customers^. You don’t have to take part in the SA Solar Feed-in Scheme (SFIS) to receive this payment.

The R-FIT is currently 6.8c/KWh*, as determined by the Essential Services Commission of South Australia (ESCOSA) as the minimum retailer feed-in tariff. Origin solar electricity customers currently receive this R-FIT rate.

^ Refer to ESCOSA: Retailer Feed-In Tariff Final Price Determination for 2016 Note: customers operating excluded generators (as determined by ETSA Utilities in accordance with the provisions of the Electricity Act) are excluded from receiving the FiT from ETSA Utilities but are entitled to receive the FiT Premium. (ETSA Utilities is now SA Power Networks).

Feed-in Tariff Scheme

The Essential Services Commission set the minimum electricity feed-in tariff (FIT) to 5c/kWh on 1 January 2016. And Origin offers eligible customers 5c/kWh from this date.

The FIT rate is based on the wholesale cost of electricity, and is reviewed each year by the Essential Services Commission (ESC). The 5c/kWh applies from 1 January 2016 until 31 December 2016.

All amounts are GST-inclusive (if any).

To see if you’re eligible or to apply for the scheme

Eligibility for this scheme applies to solar and other eligible forms of renewable energy systems with a size under 100 kW that were connected to the grid from 1 January 2013.

To apply, you can read our Origin Energy Feed-inTariff Agreement and complete the schedule online. Alternatively, you can print and return the completed and signed last page of the agreement to:
