The myths preventing Perth homes saving on natural gas

Despite 79 per cent of Perth residents claiming they would consider changing natural gas retailers to save money, nearly half have never done so according to new research.

“A lot of Perth homes are missing out on potential savings because of myths about what’s involved in switching natural gas retailers,” said Duncan Permezel, General Manager Retail Sales, Origin.

“According to research, 52 per cent of Perth residents incorrectly believe that switching natural gas retailers can take up to several weeks, a quarter believe it is just too hard, and 17 per cent believe they would be without gas while switching.”

“The truth is that changing retailers is as simple as a quick phone call or a few minutes online, there is absolutely no disruption to your natural gas supply, and you can end up saving up to $210 a year on your natural gas bill – it’s that simple.”[1]

Of those people looking to save, 48 per cent said they would make the switch for savings of between $10 – $20 a month.

Origin launched in Perth in October 2017 with a market leading 35 per cent off natural gas usage charges – increasing the number of gas retailers in Perth to four and sparking increased competition.

But more than one third of Perth residents surveyed said it has been more than 12 months since they shopped around – meaning they are missing out on potentially big savings.
