Sunny Dang – Powered by good energy

At Origin we are providing good energy in more ways than one. It’s our people that are working hard to support our customers and communities across Australia every day.

Sunny’s story

Sunny has always had his eye on Origin. Before he worked at Origin’s Melbourne office, he said “I would walk past the Melbourne office look at up at the building, stare at the signage and say out loud to whoever was listening that I would one day work for Origin. I knew it’s where I would feel happy and at home”, and that’s just how he feels today.

In May 2020 he hit a personal milestone, 3 years as part of Origin. It’s been a rewarding journey, having started in the contact centre helping our customers choose the right energy plans, and then focusing on taking those skills with him to the Solar contact centre.

Sunny said “I always knew Origin was the place for me to succeed” and he has done just that. It’s during his time speaking with customers that he’s learnt the true power of helping others and through his day-to-day role as a Solar specialist consultant.

No two days are the same, you can find him on the phones answering calls helping to address his customer’s needs, identifying the best possible solution for each individual, or following up on progress to help navigate a customer through to a solution. Sunny said, “it can be tricky to understand exactly what would suit our customers the best, but that’s where my work in volunteering really helps me and my customers.”

Outside of his day job he volunteers his time helping kids by providing tutoring in maths. He started tutoring students he knew through his community, and his offering quickly became a national offering, reaching as far as QLD where he’s been tutoring students online. Sunny said “I never thought I would tutor more than a few students, but to think people have found out how I might help outside the state I live in is pretty amazing. I get so much from these students and it helps me to become a more patient, empathetic, and a considered person’’.

The learnings he takes from his students helps him to give his best to his customers. “I’ve learnt to be more patient, open my ears and listen more widely, and consider the problem ahead – and sometimes that’s just what you need for your customers as well,” said Sunny.

Together, with the support of our philanthropic arm, the Origin Energy Foundation, Origin people like Sunny are contributing to the wider community, and in turn, bringing those skills back into the workplace to shape how we provide good energy.
