Spike points hit $1 million milestone

You might’ve heard about our energy saving reward program, Spike. Since launching in August last year, more than 50,000 Origin customers have signed up, collectively earning more than $1 million Spike points by reducing their energy usage by a total of 43 megawatts hours (MWh). That’s enough energy to power nearly all the homes in a town the size of Toowoomba (QLD) for an hour.

How can saving energy mean rewards for you?

Energy-saving habits, no matter how small, add up when thousands of households are contributing at the same time. These changes in usage have a big impact on reducing energy demand and helping the network during peak times.  

Reducing the amount of strain on the network during peak times through what are known as ‘demand response’ programs, like Spike, can be an efficient and cost-effective alternative to turning on additional power stations to meet higher demand on the grid during peak times (like in the evenings when everyone comes home and turns on the heater and the telly). 

This is where Spike’s a real game changer. When you’re a Spike member, you’ll get notified about upcoming ‘Spike Hours’ by email and text. 

All you need to do to earn points is beat your personalised goal that we calculate for each customer (based on their prior 10 days’ energy usage at the same time of day). All it might take is leaving that load of washing for an hour, delaying switching the dishwasher on or turning the aircon up or down a little to save energy.  

When you meet your energy saving goal during your Spike hour, you’ll be rewarded with points that can be redeemed for PayPal cash or gift cards.
