Origin is meeting customer demand for cleaner, greener energy, announcing it will purchase 100% of the solar energy generated from Moree Solar Farm in New South Wales.
The Moree Solar Farm, in northern NSW, comprises close to 223,000 tracking solar PV modules and is expected to produce around 145 GWh of energy annually – enough to power around 24,000 homes.
An Australian first
The project is the first of its size to use a single-axis tracking system, which means that the PV modules rotate to follow the sun’s path from east to west in order to maximise the energy generated during the day.
Moree’s sunny conditions are ideal for solar, with the Moree Solar Farm expected to have a minimal variation in annual output of just 5%.
“The project is the first of its size to use a single-axis tracking system”
It’s a sign of Origin’s commitment to renewable energy and its focus on delivering green energy to its customers.
In September 2015 Origin was the first energy company to announce its commitment to all seven of the global ‘We Mean Business’ coalition initiatives on climate change.
Origin Chief Executive Officer, Energy Markets, Frank Calabria said, “Origin will continue to lead on reducing emissions by entering into power purchase agreements (PPAs) on large-scale renewable projects like Moree, as well as empowering our customers through our in-home solar and battery solutions.
“Solar technology has improved dramatically over the past few years and the cost has come down as a result. There has never been a better time for Origin to pursue large-scale solar opportunities – and fulfil its aspiration to be one of Australia’s leading renewable energy companies.”
Under the agreement, Origin will purchase 100% of the electricity generated by Moree Solar Farm – meeting customer demand for renewable energy and helping meet Origin’s obligations under the Federal Government’s Renewable Energy Target.
Moree Solar Farm was built by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures, FRV, one of the world’s leading experts in photovoltaic and thermosolar energy, and was commissioned earlier this year.
FRV Chief Executive Officer Rafael Benjumea said, “This transaction represents a key step in achieving FRV’s strategy to develop and build renewable power generation assets across Australia and globally.
“The agreement is yet another Australian market first for FRV and demonstrates that stability is starting to return to the Australian renewable energy market,” said Mr Benjumea.
The Moree PPA is Origin’s first ever Australian solar PPA and complements Origin’s nine existing offtake agreements with wind farms in south-eastern Australia, growing its renewable portfolio.
Origin continues to look for more sites like Moree, to pursue developments in utility scale solar and was recently shortlisted for funding by ARENA for a development approved site in Darling Downs, Queensland.
