“A good mix of experience and wisdom, enthusiasm and potential” is how our East Australia Operations Manager, Alexandra Robertson, describes her team, which is tasked with managing the complex pipelines that transport natural gas across the Queensland-based Australia Pacific LNG Project sites.
Here we sit down with Alexandra, who leads the management and maintenance of our eastern Australia and Surat pipeline networks and assets, to see what it’s like working with natural gas at the source.
How do you and your team make a difference?
We play a critical role for Origin’s exploration and production business. Through our pipeline network which incorporates about 435 kilometres of pipeline, we have a significant job transporting huge quantities of gas across Queensland, which is crucial to the supply of energy and therefore to the domestic market.
Our team transports the gas between sites that Origin owns and operates and also those of our partners. We maintain the integrity of the pipeline and ensure that the gas nominations are correct in accordance with the relevant agreement.
And we also manage all third-party pipeline crossings (points at which our pipelines cross pipelines owned by others). There have been around 60 new crossings in approximately 18 locations in the last 18 months. Managing these crossings requires the team’s experience, commitment to safety and stakeholder management.
What challenges are you and your team looking forward to?
We have ongoing logistical challenges, requiring the team to travel vast distances to perform their roles. For example, each month our team has to travel by helicopter in order to cover the entire pipeline distance.
In preparation for the Australia Pacific LNG project to be completed in 2015, we are setting up our pipeline controllers team to provide 24/7 support. However, we’re well placed to face this challenge head on with help from the more experienced members of the team, who share their knowledge to help mentor the newer members of the group, setting us up for success.
How do you feel about being a part of ‘Origin’s energy story’?
I am inspired by contributing to the growth of Origin. It’s exciting to be a part of its history and a part of a period of time which we will look back on and think how far we have come.

We see the future in gas and Alexandra and her team play an important part in preparing us for this future.
We’re part of the Australia Pacific LNG joint venture which is building a multi-billion dollar CSG to LNG project, and helping to create a new export industry on the east coast of Australia.
