A Tesla isn’t just something to park in your driveway. The company has just begun producing their much-awaited roof tiles according to Reuters, so you'll be able to power your home with Tesla solar too.
According to Reuters, Tesla began manufacturing its solar roof tiles at the company’s New York factory last month and has started surveying the homes of customers who made a deposit to reserve the product last year.
Why it's exciting
Installing solar panels is a great step towards generating sustainable energy for your home and reducing your energy bills. If you’re not a fan of the look of traditional solar panels though, Tesla’s Solar Roof might be right for you.
The Solar Roof lets you cover the top of your house with tiles made of tempered glass and a solar cell inside. It complements your home’s architecture while turning sunlight into electricity – energy is collected during the day and made available any time.

Tesla offers both solar and non-solar tiles, meaning you can customise the amount of electricity produced to fit your families’ energy needs without compromising on looks. According to Elon Musk, customers could cover between 40 and 70 percent of their roofs in solar tiles, depending on the size of their roof.
The tiles are made to look like regular roof tiles from street level and because they’re made from tempered glass, Solar Roof is about three times more durable than traditional roof tiles and shouldn’t degrade over time.
When it comes to crunching the numbers, you’ll be pleased to hear that Tesla’s Solar Roof might even be able to save you money in the long run. In a press release Tesla explains that although the upfront cost of solar tiles are more expensive, it can be more than offset by the energy the tiles produce - with a reduction in a home’s electricity bill over time being greater than the cost of the roof.
You can pre-order the Solar Roof with a $1310 deposit on Tesla's website, with installations kicking off in Australia this year.
