Choosing the right energy plan

26 October 2017

If you’re not an energy expert, finding the right energy plan can be tricky. So we’ve made the process a whole lot easier by putting together a list of simple questions.

We've put together a list of questions to help you find the right energy plan and figure out all the details – including tariffs, rates and supply charges. That way, you can make sure you’re getting everything you need, at the best price.

What do I want from my plan?

There are lots of energy plans on the market to suit different needs – so there are a few things to keep in mind when you’re doing a comparison.

  • Price – What plan has the best electricity rates and fees? How can I get a fixed price energy plan?
  • Convenience – What’s the quickest way to get connected? What bill and payment options do I have? How will I handle my account? What are the service centre hours?
  • Control – How will I know my energy rates? How can I check my usage to help conserve energy?

What's my current plan?

If you’re looking for ways to reduce your electricity bill, the best place to start is with your current plan. Here are some key things to look out for:

  • Does your plan account for your household usage?
  • Does your plan have any bonuses or discounts for paying online or on time?
  • Is your plan flexible? Can you exit at any time without getting charged?
  • Are your needs being met?

You should also check for any hidden fees you might be paying, or fees you’d need to pay for changing your plan.

4 questions to ask when choosing an energy plan

Checking your old bills

Have a close look at how many kWh of electricity you’re using each quarter, your product type and the duration of your energy plan (when does it expire?) It’s also helpful to understand your usage charges, supply charges and any other fees you’re paying.

If you can, try to look at all four quarters – your energy use will most likely fluctuate as the seasons change. Take note of your average daily usage, and use this as the basis for getting a new energy plan.

You’ll need to check how you’re being charged on your current plan too. It should have either:

●      A single flat rate that’s set for 12 months, regardless of consumption.

●      Different energy rates, where you’re only charged for what you consume.

Once you have this information, it’s time to look at what plans are available.

What are my options?

Usage Plan

On a usage-based plan you’re only charged for what you use – so it’s good to know what’s influencing your electricity rates.

Here are some things to consider when you’re comparing usage-based plans:

  • Look at the rate per kWh and check the fine print. Since we don’t charge any exit fees, you can try out any Origin product and then swap if you need to.
  • Even if you don’t use any electricity, you could still be paying fixed supply charges – which is the fee for getting electricity or gas to your residence. These charges can vary from retailer to retailer.
  • You could be eligible for discounts for using direct debit, e-billing or just for paying your bills on time.
  • Check if you’re charged late fees, and try to avoid them if you can.
  • Find out how often you receive your bill and how you can pay it.
  • See if there are any other fees for things like set-up or paper bills.
  • Find out if there’s a contract, how long it’s for and if there are any exit or moving fees.
  • Check for any other terms and conditions that will affect you.

Origin usage plans

Origin Supply is our most flexible option. It can be set up quickly, has no contract, and no discount benefits.

Origin Saver and Origin Maximiser are great plans if you’re trying to save. They both have 12-month contracts, but offer a pay-on-time discount and a guaranteed usage discount.

All three plans are based on the standard market rate and have no exit fees – although some other fees may apply.

How can I avoid bill shock?

With a fixed plan you can forget about changing energy rates. Instead, you get a set price for 12 months – so you’ll know exactly what to expect from every bill.

Our fixed plans have no exit fees, even though the price is set for 12 months, which means you can still switch at any time.

Other features include:

●      Direct debit – so you’ll never miss a payment

●      Email and billing communications

●      Green energy and Gas options for a set amount.
