It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Sally Bernard of @insidefourlines talks about the importance of giving back during the festive season

It is that magical time of the year.

Close your eyes.

Make a wish.

You never know, it may just come true.

Looking back on Christmas as a little girl, it was always my most favourite time of the year.  I can remember my stocking – red felt with a Santa cut out and sequins; the smell of gingerbread cooking in the oven; the sounds of Bing Crosby and his Christmas melodies; and the twinkling star on top of our tree.

We would always take a trip into town to see the magical Myer windows – my treat was a little jar of  ‘bo-peeps’ (tiny boiled lollies in all the colours of the rainbow).

These are some of my most treasured memories – and so, with a young family of my own – we set out to create our own Christmas traditions, that I hope, in time, will mean as much to them too.

On the first of December, we dust off the decoration box and set up our tree. We have created our own Christmas ‘play-list’ of tunes that always run on repeat!

Baking and craft take a festive twist throughout the month and living beachside, we enjoy plenty of summer catch-ups with friends.

We believe it is important to teach our boys that Christmas is also a time for giving. Each year, we gather a box of toys from our home to be passed onto others to enjoy.

The excitement of Christmas Eve is second to none! A special delivery arrives at our door filled with carrots and oats for the reindeer, cookies for Santa, the ingredients to make our own ‘Magical Milkshakes’ and a book to read before bed.

Our boys stay up late for one of our favourite treats – a trip to see the Christmas lights. We are lucky, because just around the corner from our place, is one of the most spectacular displays I have ever seen!

This year, Origin Energy have partnered with the Make-A-Wish® Foundation and set up a website – – to help you locate the best of the best Christmas lights near you, right across Australia. And if you register your house’s Christmas lights display, you could win a $1,500 credit on your Origin electricity account.

Whilst finding your nearest display, you can make a donation to the Foundation directly through the website – and the best part, Origin will match, dollar for dollar, any donation made on the site, up to $30,000.

The Make –A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children aged three through to eighteen years old, who are battling a life threatening illness. They aim to bring hope, strength and joy to every child whose wish is granted.

So jump online – support your local community this festive season, and at the same time, donate and make dreams come true.

From our family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas xx
