Electric vs traditional cars

As electric vehicles become more popular in Australia and we start seeing more models hit the road, we took a moment to explore the differences between them and traditional options; and it turns out there’s more there than just their power source. 

Let’s take a look at the main differences:

  • Electric cars have no tailpipe emissions, while traditional cars produce greenhouse gases and tailpipe emissions.
  • Most electric cars can travel more than 100 kilometres before needing to be recharged, however traditional cars can travel more than double that, at between 200 and 500 kilometres before refuelling.
  • Electric cars take between 30 minutes and 12 hours to recharge, while a traditional car only takes a few minutes to refuel.
  • It costs about $2 to drive a Nissan LEAF 100 kilometres charged at the off-peak electricity rate of 15 cents per kilowatt hour. Meanwhile, it costs $12 to drive 100 kilometres in a similar-sized Mazda 3 at $1.47 per litre for fuel.
  • Electric cars can be recharged at home or at a charging station and no one needs to be present during the process. Traditional cars have to be refuelled at a petrol station and someone needs to be present.
  • Electric cars are low-maintenance because they have fewer moving parts than traditional cars, which require moderate maintenance.
  • Finally, electric cars have little engine noise and virtually no vibration. Traditional cars on the other hand produce significant engine noise and vibration, making the drive a different experience.
