Diversity and inclusion are central to way we work at Origin – and Kalkadoon and Mitakoodi woman Leah Cummins is testament to how we are helping women move into traditionally male dominated roles.
Before joining Origin in 2010 as a geotechnical assistant – Leah had worked a tough and physically demanding job that often saw her working in 40-degree temperatures for 12-15 hours a day. Over three years, she rose to become a senior geotechnical assistant working in a sub-surface data management role.
She credits her perseverance to her great grandmother.
“My great grandmother had 10 children and worked to provide for them. If she could raise and support a family of 10 during that time and stand up for what she believed in, it makes me think, ‘Why can’t I be like that?” said Leah.
Leah wants people to know “being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person does not diminish our capabilities in becoming something more exceptional”.
“There are people in my wider group who are qualified and twice my age, and who ask for my opinion. I feel like I’m making a difference at Origin because of the good mentors and managers who listen to what I have to say. I love it.”
Leah sees great benefits in having more women in male-dominated industries. “During my time I have seen a shift in work culture at Origin and I just love it– females are leading the way!”
Leah is now is now working towards her bachelor’s degree in spatial information systems at the University of Southern Queensland, taking advantage of Origin’s flexible working policy to achieve a better balance at work and at home.
