Pull the plug on hungry appliances.

Want to save about a hundred bucks a year? Then start switching your appliances off at the wall when they’re not in use.

According to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, standby power consumption costs the average household almost $100 per year. While the actual day-to-day cost is minimal, it sure adds up over a year. You could buy another appliance with that money!

Some of the culprits are surprising, with printers, routers and smart speakers topping the list of electricity vampires. Then there are your usual suspects, like microwaves, TVs and washing machines.

Start turning them off at the outlet when you’re done – it’s a great habit to get into. Just don’t get carried away and turn off the fridge, too. You can’t turn off the smell of prawns gone bad.
