Cash rewards for customers who save energy
Customers will be rewarded with PayPal cash or gift cards for reducing their energy use during peak periods through a new online energy savings program launched by Origin Energy today, called Spike.
Origin customers who sign up for Spike will be invited by email or SMS to participate in regular energy saving challenges called Spike Hours that involve small changes to their energy use during peak periods. This includes adjusting the airconditioner temperature by a few degrees for an hour, or postponing the use of washing machines, dryers and other energy-hungry appliances.
When customers meet their energy saving goals, based on forecast energy use, they will be rewarded with points that can be redeemed for PayPal cash or gift cards. Spike customers who regularly reduce their energy use by 60 per cent during Spike Hours could earn approximately $250 per year in rewards.1
Spike uses gamification and tangible rewards to encourage repeated energy saving behaviour. Smart devices can also be connected to the Origin Spike platform to automate participation and help customers to save more.
Origin Executive General Manager Retail, Jon Briskin said, “Origin Spike is the first program of its kind in the Australian energy market – it’s a simple and fun way for customers to get some extra cash in their pocket as a reward for making small changes to their energy use.
“While customers will be rewarded for shifting their energy use, the broader network will also benefit as we can help reduce demand, and support grid stability during peak periods.
“Demand management helps to reduce strain on the network when the balance between supply and demand can be tight, and also assist with the transition towards a cleaner, smarter energy system in Australia.”
Origin has partnered with innovative US start-up, OhmConnect to launch Origin Spike in Australia – the team behind popular mobile apps Words With Friends and Farmville.
Since its inception in 2014, OhmConnect has grown to more than 675,000 users across the USA and Canada, and has paid more than US$12 million in rewards for a reduction of over 5.2 gigawatt hours in electricity demand.
Spike is available to Origin residential customers with a remote-read smart meter. For further information and to sign up visit origin.com.au/spike.
Note for editors:
1 Spike customers who reduce their energy use by an average of 60% compared to their baseline energy forecast of 1.2KwH or higher, and do so for more than 20 consecutive Spike Hours can earn $250 or more per year in rewards.service.
