Aussies planning to take advantage of the Boxing Day sales to buy a new TV or washing machine are being advised to invest in energy-efficient appliances to make sure they don’t pay more in the long run.
According to research conducted by Origin, customers on its current Maximiser discounted electricity rates could save in the range of $1,300 to $2,300 over the next ten years on the running cost of their washing machine if they choose a 5-star energy-efficient unit compared to a 1.5-star rated machine to do their daily load [i].
Meanwhile, a 6-star energy efficient TV could save those customers around $240 to $410 over the next ten years when compared to a 2.5-star rated TV based on 2.5 hours per day of TV viewing. [ii]
“When it comes to this year’s Boxing Day sales, it’s tempting to look at the big discounts, but you should also consider the ongoing running costs of these appliances using the star ratings,” says Origin’s Stuart Osbourne.
“Boxing Day sales are a great opportunity for Australians to upgrade their appliances, but take advantage of the discounts to invest in high quality products which will save in long-term running costs rather than purchasing the cheapest model on sale.”
· Cooling: a 2.5-star rated air conditioner could cost you 85 per cent more to operate than a 7-star energy efficient unit[iii]. If units are not the right size for the area they are working in, they could be running at a maximum capacity and be costly to operate, particularly those with a low energy-efficiency.
· Refrigerators: a 2-star rated fridge/freezer unit could cost over 80 per cent more to operate than a 4.5-star energy efficient unit. This could end up costing between $486 to $826 more over 10 years[iv]. Origin recommends investing in a fridge that meets a minimum 4.5-star rating to ensure running costs are kept to a minimum.
· Ditch the second fridge: Many people keep old refrigerators for years because they are an expensive item to replace, but as they operate 24 hours a day, every day, your old fridge could be adding significantly to your electricity costs.
· Dishwashers: a dishwasher rated 2.5-stars could be costing you twice as much as a 4.5-star energy efficient unit. The difference in running cost over 10 years could be in the range of $350 to $650.[v].
· Washing machines: a 1.5-star rated washing machine could cost up to four times as much to run compared to a 5-star energy efficient unit. The difference in running costs could be in the range of $1300 and $2300 over 10 years[vi].
· Clothes dryers: a 10-star energy efficient clothes dryers can cost between 36 cents and 61 cents per load, which is significantly less than a 2-star model[vii] that could cost anywhere between $1.38 to $2.35 per load. Before choosing a clothes dryer, it’s important to factor in unit size, electrical, plumbing, drainage and venting requirements necessary to operate the unit.
· Televisions: Over the course of 10 years, Aussies could save between $214 to $410 operating costs on a 6-star 65” LED TV compared to a 2.5-star LED TV of the same size[viii].
Value for money
· Consider all costs: Think about where you’re going to use the product and what else may be required to get it working, particularly for big investment purchases which may require additional installation and electrical costs.
· Longevity: Think about how long you’re expecting a product to last and how often you will use it. Superior products will be designed to go the extra mile, with quality appliances lasting years longer than the standard warranties offered in Australia.
