Feed-in tariffs

Feed-in tariffs credit your bill for generating excess solar energy

Solar panels will sometimes generate more energy than you use. You may qualify for a credit on your energy bill for contributing energy back into the power grid (i.e. feed-in tariff)

Your feed-in tariff rate depends on the State you live in and may be supplied by your state government, by your retailer or with contributions from both.

Feed-in tariffs for new solar customers

  • ACT

    Voluntary Feed-in Tariff Scheme

    21 July 2014 onwards

Origin will provide customers with eligible solar electricity generation systems in the ACT our voluntary feed-in tariff (FIT) rate of 6c/kWh* for excess electricity exported to the grid.

To be eligible, you need to have a net metered installation with a system capacity of less than 30kW. Some restrictions do apply.

Having a net metered installation means that you first use the electricity you generate from your solar system at your property and any electricity that you do not use goes back into the electricity grid.

If you’d like information on the restrictions that apply, or if you have any questions in relation to solar FITs, please contact our Solar Resolution Specialists on 1300 791 468. We’ll be happy to help.

*Subject to change at any time. All amounts are GST-inclusive (if any).

    Minimum Retailer Feed-in Tariff (R-FIT)

The Minimum Retailer Feed-in Tariff is a mandatory feed-in tariff (FIT) payment that electricity retailers must pay to eligible net metered solar electricity customers^. You do not have to participate in the SA Solar Feed-in Scheme (SFIS) to receive this payment.

The R-FIT is currently 5.3c/KWh* as determined by the Essential Services Commission of South Australia (ESCOSA). Origin solar electricity customers currently receive this R-FIT rate.

    * ESCOSA has declared this rate to be GST exclusive

^ Refer to ESCOSA: Retailer Feed-In Tariff Final Price Determination for 2014 Note: customers operating excluded generators (as determined by ETSA Utilities in accordance with the provisions of the Electricity Act) are excluded from receiving the FiT from ETSA Utilities but are entitled to receive the FiT Premium.” (ETSA Utilities is now SA Power Networks).

    Feed-in Tariff Scheme

    8c/kWh rate (1 January 2013 to 31 December 2014)

The current Feed-In Tariff (FIT) scheme commenced in Victoria on 1 January 2013 and is scheduled to run until 31 December 2014. This scheme requires electricity retailers to offer a minimum FIT rate of 8c/kWh for any electricity exported to the grid to eligible electricity customers who have a solar, wind, biomass or hydro system that is less than 100kW.

The FIT scheme is funded by electricity retailers. Currently, Origin offers eligible customers 8c/KWh until 31 December 2014.

Following the repeal of the carbon scheme, the Essential Services Commission has determined that the minimum electricity feed-in tariff of 8c/kWh will change to 6.2c/kWh on 1 January 2015. Origin will offer eligible customers 6.2c/kWh from this date.

The FIT rate is based on the wholesale cost of electricity and will be reviewed and updated annually until 2016 by the Essential Services Commission (ESC).

All amounts are GST-inclusive (if any).

    Eligibility and accessing the scheme

Please read the agreement, complete the schedule online or sign and return the last page of the agreement to:

    Solar FIT Agreement

Once these steps are complete, we will proceed to apply the FIT to your electricity account for so long as you continue to meet the scheme requirements. This will be 8c/kWh up until December 2014, and from 1 January 2015, 6.2c/kWh.

*Subject to change at any time. All amounts are GST-inclusive (if any).
