170,000 students celebrate Origin's Energy Safety Week

ASX/Media Releases

04 Aug 2008

More than 170,000 pre-school and primary school children will learn to use gas and electricity safely at home and outdoors this week as part of Origin’s Energy Safety Week.

Most injuries to children involving gas and electricity occur at home and can be easily avoided. Energy Safety Week aims to prevent energy related injuries to children by promoting an awareness of energy in the home.

Energy Safety Week is offered free to all schools in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland and will be extended to schools in New South Wales during 2009. It is supported by state government safety authorities including Office of the Technical Regulator (SA), Energy Safe Victoria and the Electrical Safety Office (Qld).

The program is achieving real results, with 77 per cent of surveyed parents saying that their child was more aware of energy safety as a result of Energy Safety Week 2007.

Sarah Clarke, Manager, Community Investment, said Origin was proud to work with schools on a program that was delivering such positive results for communities.

“Teachers are really championing Energy Safety Week. Almost 7,000 teachers have ordered the resource in 2008 and every year we’re inspired by the creative projects their students produce and how many people they reach in the community,” she said.

Many schools will be involving the whole community in their Energy Safety Week celebrations. Cummins Area School (SA), is creating an energy safety display for visitors to the local library, safety feature stories for the school newsletter and displaying students’ work on their website.

Students are encouraged to enter their creative projects into the Switch™ Awards for a chance to share in prizes worth $85,000. Entries close 15 September.
