Electricity Off-Peak Tariffs

26 July 2001

Over the last 12 months, Origin Energy has held discussions with the Victorian Government on increasing prices for loss-making off-peak electricity tariffs. In May, a proposal was made to commence increasing these tariffs to profitable levels.

Today, Origin Energy’s General Manager Public and Government Affairs Tony Wood said “ we note with disappointment the Minister for Energy and Resources announcement today that Origin Energy’s proposed price increases will not be allowed, although we welcome the Minister’s recognition that the Office of the Regulator-General has investigated and supports Origin’s view that off-peak tariffs under-recover on costs”.

“Unfortunately this decision means that adjustments to off-peak tariffs will occur at the same time as other upward pressures flow through to consumer prices in January 2002,” Mr Wood said.
