Construction of Eraring Power Station started in 1977. The first generating unit went into service in 1982, the second and third units in 1983, and the fourth unit was commissioned in 1984.
Eraring power station is on the western shore of Lake Macquarie, 30km south-west of Newcastle.

The initial Environmental Strategy Meeting was held in February 2009, and included representatives from Government Departments, local State and Federal Members of Parliament, university academics and community environmental and fishing organisations.
Subsequent meetings were held in 2010, 2011 & 2012 maintaining a commitment to continuing the high standard of environmental management of the Eraring Power Station’s operations and continued cooperation with the local community.
