Government rebates
This information is for people living in Queensland.
The Queensland Government offers up to $500 under the Residential Gas Installation Rebate Scheme to help you switch to natural gas or LP Gas as an efficient and reliable energy option for your home.
Just by switching from electricity to gas for your hot water and cooking, you can reduce your household’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately two tonnes a year*. And if you choose our Green Gas option, you can also offset the emissions from your gas consumption.

How do I apply for the Rebate?
- Print, complete and sign the Rebate application form;
- Attach a copy of the proof of purchase (receipt/s) for the gas appliance/s; and
- Attach a copy of the Gas System Compliance Certificate issued by the gasfitter.

How do I receive the rebate?
The rebate is paid as a credit on your Natural Gas or LP Gas bill.
Am I eligible for the Rebate?
The rebate is only available to property owners in Queensland (including rental property landlords) where eligible gas appliances are:
Replacing electric, and some non-electric appliances
Purchased on or after 7 September 2006 and installed before the Scheme
ends (scheduled for 31 August 2009, or when all the allocated rebate funding
has been claimed)
Installed in existing residential premises, being a detached house or limited
to some attached dwelling types such as town houses, terrace houses and villa
units.
Please note that the rebate is not available for:
Installations in flats or units in multi-storey
buildings
Installation of gas appliances in new homes
Replacement of a gas appliance with another gas appliance
Replacement of a solar hot water system, or a heat pump system, with gas
Properties located outside of Queensland.

How much can I get from the rebate?
There are 2 categories of appliances:- Under Category 1, you can apply for a $300 rebate for an eligible gas hot water system*
- Under category 2, as long as you already have a gas hot water system
installed, you can apply for a $200 rebate for either:
- A gas cook top (minimum 4 burners), gas oven or gas stove
- An internal gas space heater with external flue with at least 4-Star Energy Rating and compliant with Australian Standard 4553
- A gas clothes dryer with external flue.
- An eligible gas hot water system and at least 1 other eligible gas appliance from Category 2
- 3 eligible appliances from Category 2, if you have a gas hot water system already installed.
For the maximum $500 rebate, you must install either:

The following gas hot water systems achieved the equivalent 5-Star Energy Rating or greater when tested in accordance with Australian Standard 4552, so are eligible under Category 1.
