Gas Meter Removal - SA & Mildura customers

You may have received a letter from us recently about a gas meter and connection that has remained unused at your property for around six years. This letter was sent to a group of South Australian and Mildura customers.

In the letter, we asked if you would like to:

  1. Arrange for removal of your gas meter; or
  2. Keep the meter at your property and enter into an energy agreement with us for supply of natural gas.

If you wish to enter into an energy agreement with us for supply of natural gas, simply call us on 13 24 63, Monday to Friday, 8am – 6pm (AEST) or sign up online.

FAQs

How do I check that my gas meter is the one Origin is referring to in the letter?

Please check that the Meter Identification Number provided on your letter is the same as that on your gas meter. If it's not, you may have a second meter somewhere on your property that you are not aware of. If this is the case and you don't need the meter and/or natural gas supply, just wait for Origin to have it removed for you.

I have natural gas connected and in use at my property but Origin has written to tell me it is not connected.

Potential causes for the confusion might be:

  • You may have a second meter at the property that you are not aware of; or
  • Your meter may be faulty.

The best way to confirm the gas connection status at the property is for us to arrange a site check. Please call us on 13 24 61 to arrange a check if you are unsure about the status of your gas meter and connection. You will not be charged for the site check.

I think my meter is faulty. I use gas at my property but I have not received a gas bill for some time.

In this instance, we advise you to call our billing team on 13 24 61. It will be helpful for our team if you can tell them when you last received a gas bill. If we do not hear from you, we may remove your meter so it is important that you contact us if you believe your meter is faulty.

I do not own the property you have written to me about. What should I do after receiving your letter?

Please refer our letter to your real estate agent or landlord promptly so they can decide what to do with the gas meter. We would like to avoid removing a gas meter and connection that your landlord may wish to use in the future. If your landlord decides to keep the gas meter, they will need to contact us to enter into a gas supply agreement.

What if I have the gas meter removed and decide I want to use gas in the future?

You may need to have a new gas meter installed and pay a connection fee for that installation. The cost of that fee will be quoted at the time of installation.

Is there a cost associated with Origin removing the meter? Will I be charged for it?

Origin will not charge you for removing the meter if you received a letter from us notifying you of the issue.

Why is there a gas meter at the property if I am not currently using gas?

At some point in the property's history, natural gas was used or it was intended that it be used. It is likely that the gas supply was disconnected at some point but the meter was not removed.
