Origin and the Mt Stuart Community
Our commitment
Origin respects the rights and interest of the communities in which they operate by working safely and being mindful of, and attentive to, the environmental and social impact of the resources, products and services we use or provide to others.
Employment
The Mt Stuart Power Station currently employs ten people to operate the facility. During the site’s expansion throughout 2009, the majority of resources were obtained from the local community when possible.
Maintaining open dialogue
Amanda Calvert is Origin’s Community Relations Advisor for Townsville, based at Mt Stuart Power Station, and is the primary interface with the local community.
Specifically, Origin’s Regional Stakeholder Advisors work with local government, community groups, schools and other stakeholders to implement community investment initiatives and to listen and respond to concerns and queries.
While she is based at Mt Stuart Power Station, Amanda also works with Origin’s LPG and Solar Retail teams in Townsville.
Investing in the community
Over the years, Origin has contributed to a number local events and initiatives as part of its community investment program. Most recently, during May 2010, Mt Stuart Power Station began hosting its first school tours to promote better understanding of energy generation, efficiency and safety.
Origin has also sponsored the 2010 Ecofiesta and Smart Lifestyle Expo, the region's biggest environmental industries trade expo.
From 2010, Origin will also be a safety sponsor for the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia. Three local Origin employees will also be participating in the ride and raising money.
