Understanding your interval bill
When you receive your electricity bill, you may notice some changes as a result of the smart meter now providing interval data. You may only want to know how much is owing and when it's due, or at other times you want more information. So we’ve redesigned the bill to save you time by providing you with both and making the changes as simple as possible.
Changes you will notice
Previous and current readings
The printing of previous and current readings information is no longer displayed on the back of a bill for accounts where the meter type is interval. With a basic meter one reading occurs during the billing period. For an interval meter, a reading is taken every 30 minutes and sent electronically to your electricity distributor. This means that there are over 4,000 reads during a three month billing period. For this reason the reads won’t be displayed on your bill. You can request a copy of this detailed data by submitting an interval meter data request.
Multiplier information
Multiplier information (that is, the difference between the previous and current read, multiplied by the cost per kilowatt hour), is no longer displayed on your bill. Interval meters will show the total amount of energy used and the corresponding cost only.
Energy display usage
The amount of energy used for each tariff component (e.g. peak and off peak) will be displayed on the bill when your meter is switched to interval. Your usage is calculated by adding all the reads recorded every 30 minutes on your meter during the billing period. If you already have peak and off peak supply this will continue.
Split bills
When a smart meter is installed, or switched to interval capability in the middle of a billing period, your bill will reflect the read before the switch and another one for after. These will both be clearly displayed and will reflect the total cost of your energy use.
Meter access
The meter access information displayed on your bill has changed, even though interval meters are remotely read, electricity distributors may still need occasional access to your meter so please continue to ensure that there are no obstructions preventing access.
