The aim of GreenPower is to provide renewable energy to more people across Australia.
GreenPower is energy from renewable sources that comes to you through the normal electricity supply grid.
When you see this logo, it means that the energy purchased has come from a renewable source.
GreenPower can cost as little as an extra $1 per week
Many energy retailers offer GreenPower plans for homes. You can choose plans that supply all or part of your household electricity. Some plans allow you to choose GreenPower from wind or solar sources.
Origin’s range of GreenPower products start from as little as an additional $1 per week and provide from 25 per cent up to 100 per cent government accredited GreenPower. Buying GreenPower can help you reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.
How it works
Firstly, there are no new wires or cables, or special plugs or fittings.
With GreenPower, the electricity will reach your house in the same way as it does now, but the power you actually use may not be from an accredited renewable source.
Buying GreenPower instructs your energy company to purchase the relevant percentage of electricity used in your home from an accredited renewable source. That electricity is then fed into the national grid.
Energy companies are required by law to show evidence that they have purchased the same amount of GreenPower that consumers have paid for.
In other words, when a customer buys GreenPower from their energy company, the company must get the same amount of energy from an accredited renewable source.

Example: Victoria’s first wind-powered tram.
- The tram runs on electricity to travel its route through the city.
- The tram company buys enough GreenPower from an energy retailer to run the tram.
- The energy retailer makes sure that the GreenPower comes from an accredited wind farm.
- Because the tram company has bought enough green electricity to run the tram, it can use the logo above.
When people see the 100 per cent GreenPower logo on the tram, they know that 100 per cent of the power needed to run that tram has come from an accredited wind farm.
It’s not easy being green.
Green statements are taken seriously. For e.g. Green Electricity Watch is an independent survey of GreenPower products – it investigates energy retailers’ products to help you choose which ones make the most difference to your carbon footprint.
The government accredits renewable sources and then makes sure that the energy retailers buy enough renewable energy from these sources to meet the GreenPower sold to their customers.
