South East Queensland storms
Storm safety
At this time, our thoughts are with the victims and families who have been affected by the recent storms in south east Queensland and northern New South Wales.
We have around 700 people at Origin who live and work in South East Queensland. Our key concerns are the safety and welfare of our neighbours in the storm-affected communities and ensuring we can deliver practical and meaningful support to people who need it most.
Electrical safety
Please take care not to use or attempt to repair electrical appliances which may have been damaged by water. For inspection of water-damaged electrical equipment, contact the Master Electricians emergency call centre on 3251 2444.
Visit the Origin Energy Institute for more information on energy safety.
Gas safety
It is important to check that gas appliances are turned off if the supply has been interrupted so there is no unchecked flow of gas through appliances when the gas supply is restored. To prepare your home for storms, make sure the chains around gas cylinders are fixed firmly. You should also secure portable cylinders outdoors in an upright position away from strong winds and potential flood waters.
If you need a safety check for gas cylinders or gas hot water systems that may have been damaged in the storms, contact us. Here are some things to look out for to ensure your safety.
- Check that the concrete slab supporting cylinders is in place and has not shifted from its original position.
- Check cylinders, the gas installation and gas hot water systems for damage from falling trees or debris.
- For gas leaks or emergencies refer to our detailed gas safety advice or call us on 1800 808 526.
LP Gas deliveries
We are continuing to deliver gas throughout the region as best as we can in the face of road closures and restricted access to properties. We expect some delays and are co-operating with emergency services to provide support where it is most needed. Safety is our priority and we appreciate your patience and trust you understand we must continue to maintain our strict safety standards in this disaster situation.
Community support
We have been in touch with our community partners to understand how we can best support both victims and volunteers. In response, we have donated $10,000 to the Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal, which has been set up to receive applications and provide funding for practical and much needed assistance, such as home repairs.
We have also donated $10,000 to the Australian Red Cross for training and equipment to their 20 outreach teams. These teams are on the ground and have made visits to over 160 homes to provide personal assistance to affected families.
Our employees are also keen to show they care and we are working together with them by matching their donations to the appeal fund dollar for dollar.
In addition to the cash donation, we are providing barbecue gas through the Brisbane City Council to families in need.
Power On program
In the aftermath of this event, we understand that some of our customers may face financial hardship. Our Power On program assists customers through difficult times with a range of long-term or short-term payment solutions.
