- Powered by natural gas
- Thirteen employees at the facility
Introduction
Uranquinty Power Station is a 640 MW gas-fired peaking power station – one of the largest open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power stations in Australia. It is designed to generate power at times of high demand, for example in summer when air conditioners tend to be extensively used and throughout winter when there is high demand for heating. It is the only power station of its type in New South Wales.
History
Origin acquired the 640 MW gas-fired Uranquinty Power Station in July 2008. The power station was already under construction at that time, with development and environmental approvals for the power station secured by the previous project owners. These can be viewed in the Uranquinty key document archive.
On 19 January 2009, after a six month development phase, Uranquinty Power Station’s four 160 MW open cycle gas turbines became fully operational.
Location
Uranquinty Power Station is located in the small township of Uranquinty, which is near Wagga Wagga in the southwest of New South Wales.
Uranquinty was chosen as the location for the power station as it is in close proximity to existing gas pipeline and high voltage electricity transmission infrastructure.
Lower emission gas-fired power generation
Uranquinty Power Station uses natural gas to operate four turbines sending all 640 MW of power generated to the National Electricity Market. As a gas-fired power station, Uranquinty produces less greenhouse gas emissions than a typical coal-fired power station when generating electricity.
Powering Uranquinty Power Station
Uranquinty Power Station’s natural gas supply is piped over 1,000 km from South Australia and Victoria.
