Natural gas is a colourless and odourless fossil fuel consisting mainly of methane CH₄, which is the simplest hydrocarbon (that is, a particle made of hydrogen and carbon atoms). It formed over hundreds of millions of years from plankton, decomposing vegetable matter and other simple life forms that were buried by sediment during that time. Eventually large quantities of gas were trapped underground.
