Energy safe kids teach us all a lesson
27 July 2009
During August, around 250,000 primary school students will celebrate Origin’s fourth Energy Safety Week.
Schools across Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia will use our free classroom toolkits to learn how to keep safe around gas and electricity.
Through the theme ‘Energy safety in the kitchen,’ students will participate in activities like cooking demonstrations and puppet plays to demonstrate safety tips like ‘don’t put your fingers in the toaster’, and ‘water and electricity don’t mix’ to their communities.
Debbie Lowe, teacher at Marks Point Primary School (NSW) said Energy Safety Week is a practical way to help reduce injuries to children involving gas and electricity.
“After participating in Energy Safety Week, I think my students will have the confidence to be energy safety ambassadors to the wider community,” she said.
Jackie De Abreu, Director of the KinderCare Learning Centre (NSW), agreed saying, “Teaching our pre-primary children practical ways to avoid energy hazards and help in the kitchen means happier parents and a more confident child.”
Feedback from parents has shown that Energy Safety Week is achieving real results – in 2008 around 80 of their parents said their child was behaving more safely as a result of the program.
