How solar power works:

The energy from the sun is captured through photovoltaic cells (solar panels) that are typically mounted on the side of your roof that has the most exposure to the sun (north or west).

With an Origin solar system, your home or business remains connected to the main electricity grid that powers your area. Any electricity that your system generates above what you use is fed back into the grid. When you require more electricity than you are producing, your system imports it from the grid automatically.

Solar electricity savings!

To install the 1kw solar system (less the $8,000 Government rebate and the Origin REC rebate) you'll pay around $3,975 (incl. GST and after rebates)†. But then the savings just keep mounting. For example:
  • A standard home that produces 4,500kg of greenhouse gas would fall to 2,500kg
  • Electricity consumption would drop from 4,500kWh to 3,000 kWh
  • Each kWh of coal fired electricity takes 2.5litres of water, so you save the environment 3,750 litres of water each year
  • And an annual energy bill of $720 would drop to around $450.

Solar power Feed in Tariffs (Victoria Only)

Origin offers a feed in tariff (FIT) to small customers in Victoria who have eligible renewable generation (solar PV, wind, hydro and biomass under 100kW in capacity).

The FIT is a buyback rate paid to customers on a net basis (the excess electricity sold to the grid after the needs of a customers' home or small business are met). The rate paid is currently 20 cents per kWh, and will not be less than the tariff you pay us for the electricity you consume.
