HEP fact sheet
“Whether you use all or part of the project, your students will become
better, more-aware energy consumers. They will see the link between their own
energy use and its impact on the environment. But, most importantly, they will
be empowered to make a difference in their homes – now and in the future.”
Dr Tim Flannery, 2007 Australian of the Year
What is HEP?
The Home Energy Project is a free online teacher’s resource about home energy efficiency that includes real-life activities with strong links to the New South Wales, Queensland, South Australian and Victorian curriculum.
The program teaches students that it’s easy to save energy, money and the environment.
More than 6,000 primary and secondary teachers have ordered HEP for their classroom.

Teacher comments
The Home Energy Project increased
students' awareness of their impact on the environment and how they
can make a difference. It also gave them life skills; something that
they learn now, which is still relevant in the future.

It would be a great resource to use in other subjects. I’ve been trying to encourage teachers in other departments to use it, for example, we are hoping to use the project with the English department and SOSE. That’s what’s great about it, it can be used by all departments if applied properly; humanities, technology and environmental studies.
Year 9 teacher, South Australia
My students have gained a greater awareness of the cost to their parents and the cost to the planet with their energy consumption. They have an idea what happens beyond the power plug, how energy is provided, and how excessive uses of energy can more than just damage the bank balance!
