We must act now to reduce our impact on global warming. Did you know that one third* of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions come from electricity generation using fossil fuels? This means the traditional electricity we use at home and at work is impacting our environment. The burning of natural gas causes greenhouse gas emissions too.
Greenhouse gas emissions, caused by the burning of fossil fuels like coal and gas, are contributing to global warming which can lead to climate change. We make it easy to make a difference for our environment and to support your AFL club's efforts to reduce their environmental impact with Green for Footy.
What
is GreenPower and how does it work?
GreenPower is electricity that comes from a new renewable generation source that
is Government approved under the National GreenPower Accreditation Program. The
GreenPower program supports the building of new, clean power sources which nature
provides like solar and wind – unlike standard energy, which is produced
by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
It’d be nice to think that once you choose GreenPower, the electricity
from that renewable source is sent directly to your home. In actual fact,
you’re still hooked up to the same grid as your non-green neighbours
and you still enjoy the same reliable service, but you can be sure that
20% of your electricity is put into the grid from a renewable source.
This means that to provide your home’s energy, less fossil fuels
are burnt and less greenhouse gas is generated. Here’s how it works:
- You choose 20% GreenPower with Origin’s Green for Footy
- Origin purchases environmentally friendly electricity from renewable
sources
- We ensure that our
GreenPower purchases equals 20% of your electricity consumption
- Electricity is supplied to your home as normal

Why
is GreenPower accreditation so important?
Some energy companies will call their energy green because it comes from a renewable
source. But only a product that has been certified as a GreenPower product (look
for the official GreenPower logo) ensures that your money goes towards investments
in building Australia ’s renewable energy industry. Origin GreenPower comes
from 20% wind and is 20% Government accredited under the National GreenPower
Accreditation Program.

What
is Green Gas?
We all enjoy cooking and heating with natural gas, but it’s also
a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. With Origin’s Green
gas you can help minimise your home’s impact on the environment.

How
does Green gas work?
When you choose Green gas, Origin makes a commitment to undertake projects,
or purchases a commitment from others’ projects, that offset greenhouse
gas emissions, like energy efficiency, renewable energy and tree planting.
These projects offset the greenhouse emissions from your natural gas consumption.

How
is Origin helping the AFL to make a difference for the environment?
In a ground breaking initiative, Origin and the AFL formed an official partnership in 2007, to help the AFL be the first sporting league in the world to become carbon neutral. Over the next two years, Origin’s AFL Green program will play hard to neutralise an estimated 120,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions generated by AFL House, the NAB Cup, and the Toyota AFL Premiership Season and Final Series matches.

Which AFL
clubs are participating in Green for Footy?
We’re encouraged and proud that many clubs have joined with us and the
AFL to help make a difference for the environment. We’re pleased to announce
the following participating clubs – Bulldogs, Cats, Carlton, Crows, Hawthorn,
Kangaroos,
Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond and the
St Kilda.

My club
is not participating. Can I still go Green for Footy?
Yes. You can still join Green for Footy to reduce your home’s energy
impact on our environment, even if your favourite club is not participating.
In this case Origin will contribute $27.50 (incl. GST) on your behalf
directly to the AFL to help them be the first sporting league in the world
to become carbon neutral.

Can I join
the Inside50 program instead of Origin AFL Green?
Inside50 is no longer available. Origin and the AFL have developed this
new program, so together we can make a difference to the environment.

What
is Origin doing to make a difference for the environment?
Origin is mindful of, and attentive to, the environmental impact of the
resources, products and services we use or provide to others.
We regard our most significant environmental impact as the emission of
greenhouse gases. The gas fired power stations that make up our generation
business emit greenhouse gas emissions.
Emissions come from our production activities and our retail business
sells electricity that comes from various generation sources which also
create greenhouse gas emissions. Our position
on climate change and our involvement in The
Australian Business Roundtable on Climate Change outlines our policy
initiatives in this area.
Most of our Greenhouse Gas emissions come from energy we purchase and
sell to retail customers. To assist our customers reduce these emissions
we provide clean energy choices.
