Reduce

The first step in reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we produce is to reduce the amount of energy we use in our day-to-day lives.

Have you ever wondered how much energy your household uses? Find out with the Origin energy efficiency calculator.

When you’ve discovered your household’s energy use, it’s up to you to help reduce it.

Reducing the amount of energy you use is one of the easiest ways to cut down your greenhouse gas emissions. Here are some ideas for using energy more efficiently:

  • Remember to switch off the lights when you leave a room.
  • Switch off the television when no one is watching it.
  • Put on a jumper instead of turning on a heater.
  • Use less hot water (and therefore less energy to heat the water) by having shorter showers or smaller baths.
  • Turn off your TV, DVD player or stereo at the power point.
  • Walk, ride your bike or take public transport instead of driving

Did you know that a standard microwave oven turned on at the switch will use approximately 27 kWh per year when it’s not being used1 (just to display the digital clock)? See more interesting facts on the effects of standby power.
