Project approvals

As the Operator, Origin Energy has been responsible to the Kupe Joint Venture for obtaining all regulatory and environmental approvals for the development.

All on and offshore regulatory approvals were granted in 2005 by the Taranaki Regional Council, South Taranaki District Council and the Minister of Conservation, concluding a fundamental prerequisite for the project.

A range of development approvals are required for the offshore activities and are being progressively obtained as the project becomes sufficiently well defined for each set of approvals.

The key approvals for this project are:

  • Resource Management Act approvals for onshore and within the 12 mile limit
  • The production mining licence for the management of the reservoir
  • Maritime Safety Authority approvals outside the 12 mile limit
  • Various Occupational Safety and Health, construction and production related approvals.

Processing of resource consents

An Assessment of Effects on the Environment (AEE) was prepared for the Kupe Gas Project in 2004, forming the core regulatory approvals document to support the Resource Consent Process. The document was developed in close consultation with government agencies, local councils, and the community.

The flow chart  illustrates the main stages and time frames through which the resource consent progressed, and highlights the opportunities the public had for involvement in the process.
