Origin and the CSG Community

Our commitment

Origin respects the rights and interest of the communities in which we operate by working safely and being mindful of, and attentive to, the environmental and social impact of the resources, products and services we use or provide to others.

Working with the community

Origin understands that we are part of the community and that our impact on the areas in which we operate is long-term. We understand the importance of respecting the local communities in which we operate, and working closely with our landowners, to ensure agriculture and energy development can co-exist.

Origin understands that farming land is important. To ensure this land is protected, we look for ways to go beyond the requirements of government policy by working with landowners to minimise impacts. In fact, during our operations, less than 2% of good quality agricultural land in our total gas field area will be affected. Furthermore, at the end of the project, the majority of the land will be available for farming once more.

We have already built two world-class reverse osmosis (or desalination plants) at Spring Gully and Talinga, and we are planning more in the future. These plants treat water extracted during CSG production and turn it into a usable resource. There are many other activities underway to minimise the impact of the CSG industry on precious water resources.

Investing in local needs

Origin is committed to promoting and assisting the interests of the communities in which it operates. We take a grassroots approach to engaging with the communities in which we are located, working to invest and respond to issues that are meaningful to the CSG community.

Origin expects to make a considerable contribution to regional economies through the purchase and use of local goods and services, where practicable, for the construction and operation of the plant.

With significant employment needs, Origin will also work to increase local skills capacity via apprenticeships, scholarships and vocational training.

Origin has introduced programs such as the Community Skills Scholarships program which provides support for young adults choosing to embark on new careers in a range of industries such as hairdressing or carpentry. Origin also created Caring About Road Safety (CARS) program which endeavours to keep locals safe on our roads through young driver education.
