Production
The production techniques to extract CSG are similar to practices used to produce natural gas.
CSG is extracted through either vertical or horizontal wells using conventional stimulation and production technology.
CSG production is initiated by pumping water from the coal cleats thereby lowering the pressure and releasing the gas. As a result CSG wells generally have lower gas flows than conventional wells.
There are some differences from conventional gas production, which provide significant advantages for CSG. Wells drilled to extract CSG are generally shallower. The drilling rigs are smaller, easier to move and can be truck mounted therefore reducing well costs. CSG processing plants are less complex than conventional gas plants as CSG often does not have impurities such as carbon dioxide, and does not require liquids separation or storage facilities.
